Student Killed in Livestreamed Philippine School Shooting
A student allegedly shot and killed a schoolmate at a high school in the Philippines on Tuesday before taking his own life.
Authorities said the shooting happened at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a Catholic private school in western Mindanao. The incident marked the country’s second school shooting in two months.
Police said the ninth-grade student went to the classroom where the victim was. He then allegedly shot the student. After the attack, police said the suspect went to the fifth floor of the building and shot himself.
Regional police spokeswoman Shella Chang shared the details with AFP as investigators began their work.
Interior Secretary Victor Remulla later confirmed that the suspect livestreamed the attack on social media. The account has since been disabled.
Video from the incident spread through local media. The footage reportedly showed a gun moving through a school hallway before the shooter pointed it into a classroom and fired.
Students in school uniforms screamed and ran toward an exit. Police have not confirmed whether anyone else suffered injuries.
Investigators are now trying to find out why the student carried out the attack. They also want to know who owned the firearm, where it came from and how the student brought it onto the school compound.
Later that day, the Philippines’ customs department suspended one of its agents as a preventive measure. Officials said the agent owned guns that investigators believe the student may have used.
Customs Deputy Chief of Staff Noel Bendijo told AFP that early information identified the agent as the suspect’s father. Investigators are still trying to determine how the student gained access to the weapons.
Bendijo said officials had spoken with the father, who was also grieving the loss of his child.
Ateneo de Zamboanga University President Father Guillrey Andal confirmed that two people died. He said the school was deeply saddened by the shooting and would continue to work with police.
The attack caused concern among students, staff and families. The school had already planned safety drills after another deadly school attack in the Philippines in June.
During that earlier attack, three teenage students died and 20 others suffered injuries.
School shootings remain rare in the Philippines. The country tightly controls legal gun ownership, but authorities say an illegal firearms market still exists.
Police continue to investigate Tuesday’s shooting, including the motive behind the attack and how the student obtained the firearm.
