Body Found Floating in McKinnons Salt Pond

Police are investigating after officers discovered the body of a 75-year-old man in the McKinnons Salt Pond on Friday evening.

The discovery happened around 5:45 p.m. on May 15. According to police, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department responded to reports of a body floating in the pond.

Meanwhile, members of the Serious Crime Unit and the Forensic Evidence Recovery Unit also arrived at the scene to assist with investigations.

The body was found north of the Mystic Beach Bar in the shallow section of the pond.

When officers arrived, they saw the lifeless body of an elderly man floating on his back in the water.

Police later identified the deceased as 75-year-old Eric Colbourne of Athill Street, Villa.

Investigators said initial reports showed that Colbourne was last seen on Tuesday, May 12. According to police, he was seen walking along Runaway Beach Road sometime during the day.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how he ended up in the pond. However, investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death remain ongoing.

In addition, personnel from the St. John’s Fire Station assisted officers with removing the body from the water.

A medical doctor later visited the scene and officially pronounced Colbourne dead at 7:06 p.m.

Furthermore, police have not released any additional details as investigators continue gathering information.

The Police Administration also extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, residents in the area expressed sadness following news of the discovery.

Police are expected to continue investigations as they work to determine exactly what happened before the body was found.

Authorities have not said whether foul play is suspected.

However, investigators are continuing inquiries and are expected to review all available information connected to the case.

The incident has again drawn attention to concerns about safety and monitoring in isolated areas around the island.

For now, police say the matter remains under active investigation.
