Third landfill fire raises concern over repeated flare-ups
Third fire reported at Cook’s landfill
A third fire broke out on Sunday, April 19. It occurred at the Cook’s Sanitary Landfill.
Moreover, officials confirmed it happened within recent weeks. Earlier fires also occurred at the same site.
The first was on February 27. Another followed within a week. However, no cause has been confirmed.
Officials cite difficult site conditions
Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Danley Phillip, addressed the situation.
He said the latest fire started in a separate area. In addition, he noted access to the location is difficult.
He linked the incident to increased dumping activity. Specifically, he mentioned building material from cleanup work.
As a result, he said equipment is under strain. Still, he believes the situation can be managed.
Fire risks explained by authority
Phillip explained that landfill fires can happen naturally. For example, chemical reactions can occur underground.
In addition, gases may be exposed. Therefore, flare-ups can develop from time to time.
However, he stressed the need for fast response. Otherwise, fires can expand quickly.
Night-time incidents create more challenges. For instance, fewer workers are available to respond.
As a result, delays can allow fires to grow. By midday, mobilisation is usually stronger.
Emergency response activated
Security first detected the most recent fire around 10 p.m. After that, several agencies responded.
The Fire Department joined the effort. In addition, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority assisted.
Public Works also provided equipment. Together, they worked to control the blaze.
Limits of prevention acknowledged
Phillip said complete prevention is difficult. He pointed to the high volume of dumping activity.
Therefore, he said flare-ups cannot always be avoided. Still, he stressed the need for control measures.
Chemical solution under consideration
Authorities are exploring additional tools. In particular, they are considering a special chemical.
This product is already used in other countries, including Panama. Moreover, it helps reduce flare-ups.
Officials have already placed an order for it. They expect it to support ongoing efforts.
Long-term landfill concerns
Phillip said long-term upgrades are needed. However, he noted they will require significant funding.
Currently, he described the site as more of a dump. Therefore, improvements are necessary.
In addition, he said proper landfill systems must be developed. Studies and expert input are already underway.
Public advisory issued
The authority apologised to nearby communities. It said daily activities have been disrupted.
Moreover, residents with respiratory issues should take precautions. They may need to stay indoors.
Finally, the NSWMA confirmed the landfill remains open. However, users should proceed with caution.
