Air Peace says Ebola concerns do not affect Caribbean route
Air Peace says its Caribbean service does not involve Ebola-affected countries. The Nigerian airline issued the reassurance following health concerns after its inaugural direct flight to Barbados on Sunday.
The airline landed at Grantley Adams International Airport during its first direct Nigeria-to-Caribbean service. Soon after the launch, concerns emerged about Ebola cases reported in parts of Africa. However, airline officials moved quickly to reassure Caribbean travellers and regional authorities.
Chief Commercial Officer Nowel Ngala stressed that Air Peace does not operate flights to countries currently reporting Ebola cases. He also said Nigerian aviation and health authorities strengthened screening measures at airports across the country.
According to Ngala, officials now closely monitor passengers arriving from affected regions. As a result, authorities continue screening travellers entering Nigeria through major entry points.
Ngala stated that Air Peace remains “100 per cent safe” for Caribbean passengers. Furthermore, he explained that travellers using the Barbados route mainly depart from Lagos and Ghana.
Additionally, he confirmed that Air Peace does not fly to the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, where Ebola cases were recently reported.
The airline also said health officials continue to carefully screen passengers before departure. Ngala added that no passengers linked to Ebola travelled on the Barbados flight.
Meanwhile, Air Peace says it will continue working with Caribbean governments to strengthen travel connections between the regions. Officials hope the new service will increase travel between Nigeria, the Caribbean, and central Africa.
Ngala also addressed concerns surrounding the airline’s decision not to continue the route to Antigua. Originally, the service was expected to operate between Lagos, Barbados, and Antigua.
However, the airline later stopped the route in Barbados because of low passenger demand and operating costs. According to Ngala, only 24 passengers travelled to Antigua. In comparison, only one passenger departed Antigua on the outbound leg.
Consequently, the airline determined the Antigua route was financially unsustainable. Ngala also highlighted extremely high fuel prices as another major challenge.
He explained that operating a Boeing 777 for very few passengers would not make economic sense. Therefore, the airline chose to end the service in Barbados instead.
Despite the changes, Air Peace says it remains committed to strengthening travel links between Nigeria and the Caribbean region.
