Government House Reopens as Living Heritage Museum

Government

Government House has reopened after a decade-long restoration project. The milestone marks a major moment for Antigua and Barbuda.

On Friday, Sir Rodney Williams officially unveiled the restored Main House and museum. As a result, the historic site now welcomes the public.

The project began in 2014 after years of urgent repair needs. Previously, the building faced leaking roofs and unsafe floors. However, steady work has now transformed it.

During the ceremony, Sir Molwyn Joseph accepted the key. He did so on behalf of Gaston Browne and Cabinet.

Importantly, Government House now holds National Heritage Site status. This adds to its cultural value.

Sir Rodney described the day as historic and meaningful. He also expressed deep gratitude to donors and partners. Furthermore, he praised the Antigua and Barbuda Heritage Trust for its leadership.

The Trust, formed in 2018, led the restoration. Since then, it has completed major structural work.

In addition, key contributors played vital roles. Janey Howell managed the project with regular site visits. Meanwhile, Dr Gabriella Howell oversaw conservation and museum development. Both worked voluntarily.

Dr Howell also created essential museum plans. These include a staff handbook, catalogue, and long-term strategy.

The new museum highlights national history. It begins with British rule in 1632. Then, it moves through emancipation in 1834. After that, it covers independence in 1981 and modern times.

Moreover, the museum connects stories to Government House itself. It complements other heritage sites rather than repeating them.

A team of historians supported the research. Among them are Susan Lowes and Natasha Lightfoot.

Notably, the museum features the Benedict Queen art collection. Nancy Underhill loaned this private collection. A full exhibition is planned for 2027.

Additionally, new efforts aim to recover names of war veterans. This work focuses on those who served in both world wars.

Finally, attention now turns to the gardens. Officials expect completion before the 45th Independence Anniversary in November.

Overall, Government House now stands as a symbol of history, pride, and renewal.
