Spider-Man of Yemen’ Dies in Climbing Fall
A Yemeni adventurer known on social media as the “Spider-Man of Yemen” has died after falling into a volcanic crater while attempting a dangerous climb without safety equipment.
Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar, 30, was scaling the steep walls of the Hardah Dam volcanic crater in Yemen’s southern Dhale province on Friday when he lost his grip and fell into the 120-metre-deep crater. A video released by the Civil Defense Authority captured the moment of the fall.
The footage shows Antar climbing a rocky cliff using only his hands, without ropes or protective equipment. Moments before the fall, he appeared to be holding onto the rock face with one hand while raising the other before losing his grip.
Rescue teams, including divers and water specialists, carried out a four-hour recovery operation in the difficult terrain. Antar’s body was eventually located about 30 metres below the water’s surface inside the crater.
Antar had built a large following online through videos of himself climbing cliffs and rugged landscapes across Yemen without safety gear. Many of his daring stunts gained widespread attention on social media.
Following the incident, Yemen’s Civil Defense Authority urged climbers and adventure enthusiasts to follow safety guidelines and use proper protective equipment to prevent similar tragedies.
