Hughes, Wehner and Azille Sworn In as Senators

Hughes

Hughes, Wehner, and Azille officially joined the Senate on Monday during a swearing-in ceremony at Government House.

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Sandra Williams attended the ceremony.

The event also marked the formal appointment of Jamale Pringle as Leader of the Opposition following the 30th April general election.

Meanwhile, Ashworth Azille, Jonathan Wehner, and Chester Hughes each took the oath of office before assuming their new roles.

The three senators will represent the United Progressive Party in the Upper House of Parliament.

However, Opposition Senator-designate Malaka Parker did not attend the ceremony.

Earlier, Parker explained that urgent travel caused her absence from Monday’s proceedings.

She also said she will announce a new swearing-in date once arrangements are finalized.

During the ceremony, Sir Rodney highlighted the important role of the Senate in Antigua and Barbuda’s democracy.

Additionally, he urged senators to serve with maturity, wisdom and integrity.

He also encouraged members to respect the country’s democratic institutions while carrying out their duties.

“The people of Antigua and Barbuda expect and deserve meaningful debate,” Sir Rodney stated.

Furthermore, the Governor General stressed the Senate’s responsibility in reviewing legislation carefully.

He explained that senators help strengthen laws before Parliament approves them.

Sir Rodney also noted that the Upper House benefits from thoughtful discussion and mutual respect.

“The Senate is at its strongest when it reflects thoughtful debate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor General praised the role of the Opposition in maintaining accountability and balance in government.

He described the Office of the Opposition Leader as a vital institution within the country’s democracy.

According to Sir Rodney, strong democratic systems depend on constructive debate and responsible representation.

Supporters of the UPP welcomed the appointments shortly after the ceremony ended.

The new senators are expected to play active roles in upcoming parliamentary debates and national discussions.

Additionally, political observers believe the appointments will strengthen the Opposition’s voice in the Senate.

The swearing-in ceremony came just days after Antigua and Barbuda completed another closely watched general election.

Hughes, Wehner, and Azille now begin their parliamentary duties as the country enters a new political term.
