Antigua begins plan for local corneal surgeries

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to begin corneal replacement surgeries locally for the first time.

The initiative forms part of government efforts to expand advanced eye care services nationwide.

Meanwhile, officials announced the plan during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant shared details of the new programme.

He said the Cabinet approved the initiative after a presentation by Health Minister Michael Joseph.

According to Merchant, the Ministry of Health is finalizing an agreement with World I Mission.

The U.S.-based organization will help introduce the surgeries in the coming months.

In addition, officials expect five corneal replacement surgeries during the programme’s initial phase.

Merchant said the treatment will help patients who normally travel overseas for expensive procedures.

Furthermore, the collaboration will expand other specialized eye care services across the country.

“The proposed collaboration will also provide for the introduction and expansion of other complex eye surgeries,” Merchant said.

The government said the programme supports broader healthcare improvement efforts in Antigua and Barbuda.

Merchant explained that the initiative aims to improve outcomes for patients with serious eye conditions.

At the same time, officials hope to strengthen local ophthalmological services.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet reportedly expressed full support for the programme.

The administration, however, has not announced an official start date for the surgeries.

Officials also have not identified the first patients expected to receive treatment.
