Hughes Promises High-Level Senate Debate

Hughes

Hughes says opposition senators plan to bring “the highest level of debate” to Antigua and Barbuda’s Senate.

Moreover, Senate Minority Leader Chester Hughes made the remarks during Wednesday’s Senate sitting. The session followed the swearing-in of senators after the April 30 general election.

Hughes said opposition senators will focus on policy, legislation, and national issues. At the same time, he stressed that debates should not center on partisan politics.

“We will criticize constructively,” Hughes told the chamber.

In addition, he said opposition senators would debate bills with purpose and national pride. He also pledged that senators would not oppose legislation simply for political reasons.

“We will not debate bills and politics,” Hughes said.

Furthermore, Hughes explained that the opposition plans to review legislation carefully before debates begin. He said senators must approach every bill with preparation and proper research.

“I’ve already advised my team that proper research must be done,” he stated.

According to Hughes, opposition senators will examine bills closely before deciding whether changes are necessary. Therefore, he said any bill returned to the Lower House should go back respectfully and with clear concerns.

“If we have to send a bill back, we must send it back with respect,” Hughes explained.

Meanwhile, Hughes also challenged younger senators to focus on issues affecting young people across Antigua and Barbuda. He encouraged them to help younger citizens understand how laws and policies impact daily life.

“I challenge the younger senators,” Hughes said.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of respectful relationships inside and outside the Senate chamber. He said political differences should never damage professionalism or national unity.

“The politics is over,” Hughes added.

The Senate Minority Leader also reminded senators that their responsibility extends beyond party lines. Instead, he urged lawmakers to continue building the nation together.

Hughes made the comments as the Senate formally opened the new parliamentary term. The sitting followed the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s fourth consecutive election victory.

Opposition senators now join government and independent members in the Upper House as Parliament prepares for the ceremonial Throne Speech later this month.
