Browne set to lead Antigua at OECS Cycling Championships

Browne

Browne will lead a strong Antigua and Barbuda team at the 2026 OECS Cycling Championships on Sunday. Top cyclists from across the sub-region will compete during the major event.

Inform rider Tahje Browne enters the championships unbeaten on the local circuit this year. Therefore, many supporters expect another strong performance from the talented cyclist.

Browne will compete in the Elite category alongside Jyme Bridges Jr., Shawn Weathered, Newell Mack, and Conroy Thomas. Together, the riders will represent Antigua and Barbuda against regional competitors.

Meanwhile, Wayne Henry, Jason Adams, Vaughn Gomes, Cornell Hughes, and Paul Smith will race in the Masters category. Young cyclist Elite Thomas will compete in the Junior division.

Additionally, officials expect more than 25 overseas cyclists and support staff for the championships. The event marks the first OECS Cycling Championships since 2019.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Federation, St. Clair Williams, shared details ahead of Sunday’s race. He explained that regional teams will arrive with mechanics and team managers.

Furthermore, Williams said local riders will also participate in the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union Invitational Race. Both events will take place on the same day and use the same route.

Preparations for the championships are already underway across Antigua. Williams confirmed ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Works to improve road conditions before race day.

He explained that officials already completed some road patching along sections of the route. However, organizers later identified additional areas needing repairs.

Consequently, Williams conducted another drive-through inspection earlier this week. After reviewing conditions, organizers requested more work before Friday to improve safety for riders.

Officials hope the completed upgrades will create a smooth and secure racing environment for all competitors. Safety remains one of the main priorities for organizers ahead of the championships.

Sunday’s race will begin at 7:00 a.m. Cyclists from Antigua and Barbuda and across the OECS will compete throughout the morning.

Supporters are expected to line sections of the route as local riders challenge for top honors. Organizers also hope the championships will help strengthen cycling development across the region after several years without the event.
