Cuban Migrants Rescued After Days Adrift

The Mexican navy has rescued a group of Cuban migrants who had been missing at sea for several days after leaving Cuba earlier this month.

According to AFP, the group set sail from Pinar del Rio, a western province of Cuba, on August 11. Their whereabouts had remained unknown, raising concerns for their safety as reports emerged that they were running low on supplies.

A source from the Mexican navy confirmed Thursday that the migrants had been rescued. The group included 15 people, among them four minors.

Concern had grown after relatives and media reports suggested the boat was experiencing difficulties. A Cuban man living in Mexico told Univision that his two children were among those on board with their mother. He said the vessel had been running low on fuel.

For decades, Cubans seeking to leave the island have taken dangerous journeys by sea. Some attempt to cross the Florida Straits toward the United States, while others travel across the Caribbean toward Mexico.

These trips are often made in small and fragile boats, leaving migrants exposed to rough waters and other dangers at sea. Over the years, many such journeys have ended in tragedy, while others have resulted in migrants being intercepted and returned.

The latest rescue comes as Cuba continues to face difficult living conditions. The report said that since Washington imposed an energy blockade on the island in January, conditions have worsened significantly.

Many areas of Cuba are now experiencing only a few hours of electricity each day. Food, water and medicine are also said to be in critically short supply.

The rescue brings relief to the families of the 15 migrants who had been missing since their journey began. However, the case also highlights the risks faced by people who attempt to leave Cuba by sea in search of a different life.

With four minors among those rescued, concerns had been especially high as the group remained unaccounted for and reportedly faced dwindling fuel and supplies while adrift.

The Mexican navy has not provided further details in the information released about the migrants’ condition or what will happen to them following the rescue.
