Philippines Quake Kills 35, Dozens Injured

Major

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least 35 people and injuring 134 others. Authorities also reported that at least a dozen people remain missing as rescue teams continue search operations.

The offshore quake occurred south of General Santos, a city with a population of about 720,000. Following the earthquake, officials issued tsunami warnings and urged residents in coastal communities to move to higher ground as a precaution.

The disaster caused widespread destruction across affected areas. In General Santos, rescue workers searched through the collapsed remains of a popular grocery store where two employees were trapped beneath the rubble. Family members gathered nearby, hoping for signs of survival as emergency crews worked into the night.

Meanwhile, Sarangani province was among the hardest-hit areas. Provincial disaster officials said 14 people died in Glan municipality after a landslide buried homes located at the base of a mountain. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

The earthquake was followed by several strong aftershocks, beginning roughly two hours after the main tremor. According to the United States Geological Survey, the strongest aftershock measured magnitude 6.5, adding to concerns among residents already shaken by the disaster.

Many people chose to spend the night outdoors, fearing further aftershocks and potential building collapses. Emergency responders remain on high alert as they continue search, rescue, and relief efforts across the affected region.
