6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Havana

6.1

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of western Cuba on Monday, sending tremors through the capital, Havana.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit about 100 kilometres off the island’s western tip. In Havana, AFP journalists reported around 20 seconds of shaking that caused people to rush out of buildings and into the streets.

Although the quake was strongly felt, Cuban authorities confirmed that no injuries or significant damage were reported. Officials also said the tremor was felt across much of western Cuba.

In the city centre, residents gathered outside buildings, checking phones and reacting to the sudden movement. Many described the experience as unfamiliar and unsettling, especially those who had never felt an earthquake before.

The US Tsunami Warning Center later ruled out any major tsunami threat. However, it noted a very small possibility of minor waves near areas closest to the epicentre.

The tremor was also felt in nearby regions, with reports reaching as far as Florida.

Residents and workers across Havana described brief panic as buildings shook and people evacuated offices and studios. Despite the alarm, the situation quickly stabilised, and normal activity resumed after the tremor passed.
