Cuba Runs out of Oil, Amid US Sanctions

Cuba is experiencing a worsening fuel shortage as tighter U.S. sanctions continue to impact the island’s access to oil and diesel supplies. The crisis has led to long lines at gas stations, transportation disruptions, and growing pressure on businesses and public services.

Officials say reduced fuel imports have affected electricity generation, public transportation, and agricultural activity. Many Cubans are also facing frequent blackouts and difficulties accessing basic goods as the country struggles to manage limited energy resources.

The Cuban government has blamed the situation on the long-standing U.S. embargo and recent sanctions targeting fuel shipments and financial transactions. Authorities have introduced rationing measures and emergency plans to prioritise essential sectors such as healthcare and food distribution.

Economists warn that the prolonged shortage could further strain Cuba’s fragile economy, which is already dealing with inflation, declining production, and migration challenges. The situation has also raised concerns about potential social unrest if conditions continue to deteriorate.
