UWI Games 2026 Return With Regional Celebration
UWI Games 2026 will officially begin on Friday with a live opening ceremony on UWItv. Moreover, the event marks the return of the regional sporting tradition after a hiatus.
The University of the West Indies will broadcast the ceremony at 5:30 PM Jamaica time. Meanwhile, Eastern Caribbean viewers can tune in at 6:30 PM.
This year’s Games bring together more than 575 student-athletes and officials. In addition, participants represent 17 countries across five UWI campuses.
The opening ceremony will launch nine days of sporting competition from May 21 to 29. Athletes will compete across 10 sporting disciplines during the event.
Meanwhile, organizers say the Games celebrate Caribbean unity, student achievement, and regional pride. The ceremony will also feature cultural performances and official addresses.
Additionally, viewers will see the Parade of Athletes and the lighting of the UWI Games Flame. That moment will officially signal the start of the competition.
The live presentation will take place at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre. The venue is located at the St. Augustine Campus.
This year’s Games carry the theme “Reunited. Reignited. Ready.” Organizers say the theme reflects the renewed spirit surrounding the event.
The UWI Games first began during the 1960s. Since then, the competition has produced several Olympians and world champions.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles described the Games as a key part of university life. He also linked this year’s return to another major milestone.
“The UWI Games are the heartbeat of the UWI student experience,” Beckles said.
He noted that the event also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Faculty of Sport. Furthermore, he praised the faculty’s role in advancing sports programmes and research.
Meanwhile, UWItv will stream the ceremony through its website, Facebook, and YouTube platforms. Therefore, audiences across the Caribbean and beyond can watch live coverage.
Organizers also encouraged viewers to follow updates and schedules through the official UWI Games website. The event is expected to draw strong regional support throughout the competition period.
