NASA study shows Earth fungus could survive on Mars

Scientists have found that a type of fungus may be able to survive the harsh conditions of space and potentially endure a trip to Mars. The study shows that the organism can withstand extreme radiation, low pressure, and limited nutrients—conditions similar to those found on the Red Planet.

Researchers tested the fungus under simulated space environments and observed that it remained viable despite exposure to intense stress. Its resilience is believed to come from natural protective mechanisms that allow it to repair damage and adapt to hostile surroundings.

The findings could have important implications for space exploration. Scientists say such organisms might be useful in future missions, including supporting life systems, recycling waste, or even helping to produce materials in space.

At the same time, the discovery raises concerns about planetary contamination. Experts warn that if microbes can survive space travel, strict measures will be needed to prevent Earth organisms from unintentionally spreading to other planets.
