Bahamas Moves to Increase Local Egg Production

Bahamas

The Bahamas Government is stepping up efforts to increase local egg production as part of a broader strategy to strengthen food security and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food.

Prime Minister Philip Davis recently visited the Golden Yolk Project, an initiative focused on expanding domestic egg production and increasing the supply of locally produced eggs to households and businesses across the Bahamas.

Davis said the government wants to increase the amount of food produced locally. According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the Golden Yolk Project has already produced 200,000 eggs and currently has 10,000 laying hens in production. Another 8,000 pullets are also being raised but have not yet started laying.

The government said the additional pullets represent an investment in the Bahamas’ future egg production capacity. As the birds mature, they are expected to help the project maintain production and provide a more consistent supply of locally produced eggs.

The Golden Yolk Project forms part of the government’s wider agricultural strategy. The initiative aims to replace a greater share of imported food with products made in the Bahamas, while keeping more spending within the local economy.

The government also said increased domestic production could create more opportunities for farmers and agricultural businesses. Expanding local agriculture is expected to help strengthen the country’s ability to supply food locally and reduce exposure to disruptions in overseas food supplies.

Davis said the government’s focus is now on turning the production capacity being developed through Golden Yolk into a consistent supply of Bahamian-produced eggs.

The Office of the Prime Minister said the government will continue to monitor the project’s progress, with increased production and reduced import dependence remaining key parts of its long-term agricultural strategy.

As the Bahamas continues efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector, the Golden Yolk Project is expected to play a role in increasing the availability of locally produced eggs for households and businesses.
