Marine conservation organization Marine Connection has renewed calls for Antigua and Barbuda to reject efforts that could lead to the return of commercial whaling.

The group argues that whales play a vital role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems and says global conservation efforts should focus on protecting marine mammals rather than reopening discussions on commercial whaling.

The issue comes as Antigua and Barbuda faces increasing scrutiny over its support for proposals at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) that critics say could weaken the long-standing moratorium on commercial whaling. Environmental groups have urged the government to reconsider its position ahead of the IWC’s upcoming meeting in Australia.

Government officials have defended their stance, describing it as support for the sustainable use of marine resources and science-based management.
