Government Starts State Board Reorganization

Government

Government officials in Antigua and Barbuda have started reorganizing state boards following the Gaston Browne administration’s election victory on April 30.

The update came during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing. Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the Cabinet had already reviewed several statutory boards as part of the restructuring process.

“Several boards were looked at, and they will continue to look at them next week,” Merchant explained.

Moreover, he said the Cabinet is selecting individuals for positions where they can “function effectively” and support the government’s development agenda.

At the same time, the administration confirmed several Senate leadership appointments and parliamentary changes ahead of the new parliamentary session, which begins next week.

The Merchant announced that the Cabinet had nominated Alincia Williams-Grant to serve as President of the Senate. In addition, Senator Philip Shoul was nominated as Vice President of the Senate.

Meanwhile, Senator Shenella Govia is expected to become Leader of Government Business in the Senate. She also serves as Minister of State within the Ministry of Works.

Merchant said the government views the Senate’s composition as a balance of women, youth, and experienced leadership. Therefore, the administration believes the appointments reflect a modern and inclusive approach.

Additionally, Tiffany Strann Peters was expected to be sworn in later Thursday as the government’s final Senate appointee. Her appointment increases female representation on the government benches.

The government also confirmed another parliamentary appointment. Joel Rayne is expected to take the oath as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance under Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

Merchant said the administration plans to move quickly during its new term. He stressed that the government intends to “hit the ground running” after securing a fourth consecutive election victory.

Furthermore, Parliament is scheduled to convene on Monday. Lawmakers are expected to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker before the ceremonial opening of Parliament later this month.

Overall, the restructuring process signals the government’s effort to strengthen leadership across state boards and Parliament. Officials also hope the appointments will improve efficiency and help advance the administration’s priorities during its new term in office.
