Medical Community Mourns Health Pioneer Dr Lake
Medical leaders across Antigua and Barbuda are mourning the loss of Dr. Cuthwin Lennard Lake. He died Monday evening at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center. He was 96.
The Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda shared the news in a statement. It described Dr. Lake as a pioneer and national leader. Moreover, the group called him the architect of the country’s modern healthcare system.
Throughout his long career, Dr. Lake shaped local medicine in many ways. He served as Chief of Surgery for several years. During that time, he upheld high standards of care. In addition, he trained and mentored many young doctors.
As a result, a generation of Caribbean physicians benefited from his guidance. The association said he helped others succeed in the field. Furthermore, it noted his strong commitment to excellence.
Dr. Lake also worked as Medical Superintendent of Holberton Hospital in the 1990s. While there, he led the facility through key changes. At the same time, he ensured quality care remained a top priority.
Colleagues say he did more than practice medicine. Instead, he built systems that still support healthcare today. Because of this, many see his impact as lasting and wide-reaching.
In 2014, the nation recognized his service. He was knighted for his lifelong work in national development. This honor reflected his deep contribution to society.
Dr. Alafea Stevens, President of the Medical Association, spoke about his influence. She said he was well known and respected. In fact, she called him a household name while she was growing up.
“He was always held in high regard,” she said. “He was an agent of change in our healthcare system.”
Meanwhile, many in the medical field continue to reflect on his legacy. They describe his loss as deeply felt across the profession.
Dr. Lake’s career spanned more than 40 years. During that time, he helped shape healthcare in Antigua and Barbuda. Today, his work continues to guide those who follow.
Efforts to reach his son, Dr. George Lake, were unsuccessful up to press time.
