UK Works to Ultimately Ban Cigarette Purchases

UK-Anyone born after December 31, 2008, will be banned from purchasing cigarettes under the proposed Tobacco and Vapes Bill. While it is already illegal to sell cigarettes, tobacco, or vapes to anyone under 18, the new approach means the legal purchasing age will continue to increase each year. As a result, many young people today will face a lifetime ban on buying cigarettes.

Once approved by King Charles III, which is expected as a formality, the law will also give the government authority to regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.

Smoking rates in the UK have dropped significantly since the 1970s, but about 6.4 million people, or 13% of the population, still smoke. Officials say smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, disability, and poor health in the country, contributing to around 80,000 deaths each year.
