Former

Former Senator Mary-Claire Hurst will receive an official funeral, the government of Antigua and Barbuda announced.

The decision came after the Cabinet held its first meeting following the general elections. During that meeting, members also paid tribute to Hurst.

Her passing was first announced on Tuesday, May 5, during the swearing-in of Cabinet members. Since then, tributes have continued across government and political circles.

The Executive described Hurst as a devoted public servant. In addition, they called her a pioneering national figure.

They said her work in public life and within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party will be long remembered.

Throughout her career, Hurst broke several barriers. Notably, she became the first woman to serve as General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

In addition, she served as a government senator. She also held roles as leader and deputy leader of government business in the Senate.

Furthermore, she served as minister of state in the Ministry of Tourism and Economic Development.

Hurst also chaired the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority. Cabinet said she earned respect for her professionalism and administrative skill in that role.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne led Cabinet in observing a moment of silence. At the same time, members praised her loyalty, resilience, and commitment to mentorship and youth development.

Political analyst Stafford Lewis also reflected on her legacy. He described her as a strong figure within the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

He said she started at grassroots level and rose through party ranks. Eventually, she became general secretary.

He also called her a leader for women in Antigua and Barbuda. According to him, she helped break barriers in a male-dominated political space.

In addition, Lewis recalled her role in a political standoff involving Asot Michael. He said she stood firm during internal party tensions.

As a result, he noted her strength and determination in political leadership.

Lewis also referenced public reactions to her passing. He said Prime Minister Browne appeared visibly shaken during the Cabinet ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority paused operations on May 7. Staff observed a moment of silence in her honour.

However, official funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Further details are expected at a later date.
