Prime Minister: Concert Shooting Not Political, Vows Crackdown

Prime

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has condemned the weekend shooting near a political rally in St John’s. He stressed the violence was criminal, not political.

First, Browne said he was “deeply concerned” about the early morning incident on Sunday. The shooting happened near a public concert hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

However, he pointed to police confirmation that the event was not targeted. Authorities said the shooting was unrelated to the rally itself.

Therefore, Browne urged the public to note that clarification carefully. He described the act as criminal violence driven by illegal guns and disputes.

Meanwhile, the concert drew thousands, based on unofficial estimates. The event ended suddenly when gunshots rang out during a performance by Masicka.

Earlier, Sizzla had performed for the large crowd. Soon after the shots, videos showed people running in panic from the venue.

As a result, Browne used the moment to repeat his zero-tolerance stance on crime. He strongly condemned illegal firearms and gang activity.

Moreover, he warned that those responsible will face serious consequences. He said police must identify and arrest the perpetrators quickly.

In addition, Browne highlighted steps already taken by his government. These include stricter laws and higher penalties for gun crimes.

He also noted stronger enforcement to stop illegal weapons from entering the country. According to him, gun violence threatens public safety and national stability.

Furthermore, Browne linked the issue to his party’s 2026 manifesto. The plan promises no tolerance for murder, gangs, or illegal firearms.

He added that the government will strengthen laws even more. It will also enforce them fully and impose severe penalties.

Importantly, Browne insisted these promises are not empty words. He called them a firm commitment to action.

Finally, he assured citizens that safety remains the top priority. He said the government will work closely with police and communities.

The incident comes days before general elections on April 30. The ruling party faces a strong challenge from the opposition United Progressive Party.

So far, authorities have reported no injuries. Investigations into the shooting are still ongoing.
