Florida Jet Crash Kills Nine Near Residential Area
A private jet carrying nine people crashed onto a road near a residential area in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, killing everyone on board.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the Florida crash in a statement shared on X. He said the Learjet 60 went down near Crest Haven, Florida, at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time.
The aircraft was travelling to the Bahamas after departing from Austin, Texas. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the nine people who died in the Florida plane crash.
Video footage from a vehicle’s black box captured the jet descending almost vertically towards a road in Florida before striking the ground and bursting into flames. The impact damaged the crash site and left a large crater along the roadside.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as a “cataclysmic plane crash.” He compared the aircraft’s descent to a missile falling from the sky and noted the large crater left at the Florida crash site.
Florida Jet Pilot Reported Ice and Severe Turbulence
Air traffic control communications reportedly captured the pilot describing problems with the aircraft shortly before the Florida crash.
According to LiveATC, a website that collects air traffic control recordings, the pilot reported that ice was accumulating on the jet. The pilot also described violent shaking caused by turbulence.
The pilot later declared a Mayday emergency, warning that the aircraft was descending rapidly over Florida.
“We are descending at 20,000 feet per minute in a high-speed dive. We are going to crash into the ground,” the pilot reportedly said.
Flight tracking data showed that the jet lost approximately 27,000 feet in altitude within one minute before the Florida crash. That represents a descent of roughly eight kilometres in a very short period.
The reported communications and flight tracking information provide details about the aircraft’s final moments before impact in Florida.
The Florida crash killed all nine people aboard the privately owned Learjet 60. Their identities remain undisclosed.
The aircraft had been travelling from Texas towards the Bahamas when it crashed near a residential area in Florida. The pilot’s reports of ice accumulation and severe turbulence were among the details recorded shortly before the aircraft went down.
