PM Browne Targets US Firm in Defamation Case
PM Browne is moving ahead with plans to file a defamation lawsuit against the United States law firm that, he says, spread baseless and damaging allegations about the government’s 2023 sale of the Alfa Nero superyacht.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, he confirmed that a pre-action letter will be issued within the next two weeks, formally launching the legal process. He explained that the government will seek US$10 million in damages, and if the firm refuses to settle, the matter will proceed to a full lawsuit in US courts.
The Prime Minister noted that a team of about seven high-profile attorneys has already been assembled to advance the case.
The law firm previously represented Russian national Yulia Guryeva Motlokhov, who accused the government of wrongdoing during the US$40 million sale of the Alfa Nero. As part of her challenge, she pushed for six years of the Prime Minister’s personal financial records—demands the government rejected as politically driven and without merit.
Earlier this year, a US court threw out all subpoenas connected to the matter, a ruling the government described as “complete vindication.”
PM Browne also revealed that he may take additional legal action against senior members of the United Progressive Party (UPP), alleging that they collaborated with “malign actors” to elevate defamatory claims.
He emphasized that the government remains focused on protecting its reputation, defending the country’s international standing, and holding accountable those who, in his words, “spread falsehoods to undermine the state.”
