Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Gives Her Nobel Medal to Trump

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado gave her Nobel Peace Prize medal to former US President Donald Trump. She made the gesture during a White House meeting, calling it recognition of his commitment to Venezuela’s freedom.

“I think today is a historic day for us Venezuelans,” Machado said after meeting Trump for the first time. The meeting came weeks after US forces seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas and charged him with drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Trump described the gesture on social media as “a wonderful sign of mutual respect.” However, the Nobel Committee clarified that the prize itself is not transferable. Machado acknowledged this but said the medal symbolizes shared commitment to liberty.

Furthermore, Machado visited US Congress to meet senators. Supporters gathered outside, chanting “María, presidente” and waving Venezuelan flags. She told reporters she presented Trump with the medal as a recognition of his “unique commitment with our freedom.”

Despite the gift, Trump has not endorsed Machado as Venezuela’s new leader. Instead, he continues working with Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice-president, acting as the country’s head of state in Washington. Nevertheless, he called Machado a “wonderful woman” and said it was an honor to meet her.

Additionally, Machado drew parallels to history, noting that Marquis de Lafayette gave a medal of George Washington to Simon Bolivar. She said her gift represents a modern symbol of brotherhood between the US and Venezuela in their fight for freedom.

Freddy Guevara, a Venezuelan opposition leader, said Machado’s gesture was not a personal move for endorsement. Instead, it reflected her focus on securing democratic elections and promoting Venezuela’s transition through popular vote.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has moved quickly to reshape Venezuela’s oil sector since Maduro’s removal. Officials completed a $500 million sale of Venezuelan oil and seized multiple tankers suspected of transporting sanctioned crude. Guevara said these actions are important but emphasized that Venezuela’s democratic transition remains the opposition’s priority.

Finally, a Venezuelan government envoy is expected to travel to Washington to discuss reopening the country’s embassy. Both Trump and Rodríguez spoke by phone, describing the conversation as productive and courteous.

In conclusion, Machado’s medal gift highlights ongoing US-Venezuela engagement. The act symbolizes political gestures, historical connections, and Venezuela’s pursuit of freedom.
