Massive sinkhole swallows canal boats in Shropshire, prompting major rescue

Massive

Massive sinkhole has opened in Shropshire, England, trapping two canal boats and triggering a major emergency response.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service reported the incident early Monday. Officials declared a “major incident” at 5:17 a.m., though the situation later stabilised.

Images show two canal boats stuck in deep mud while a third leans dangerously over the sinkhole’s edge. The sinkhole measures roughly 50 by 50 meters.

Canal boats are long vessels once used for cargo. Today, many serve as homes or for recreation along Britain’s historic canals.

Rescue teams responded quickly to a significant breach of the Shropshire Union Canal in Whitchurch, a historic town near the Welsh border.

Scott Hurford, Area Manager at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said no one is believed to be on board the affected boats. Furthermore, no injuries have been reported.

Teams faced challenging conditions, including unstable ground and rapidly moving water. Nevertheless, crews successfully brought more than ten members of the public to safety.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to avoid the area. Emergency services continue to secure the site and monitor conditions closely.

The Canal and River Trust, the UK’s largest canal charity, confirmed it is investigating the cause of the breach. Meanwhile, it has dammed off the affected section of the canal.

“Our priority is the safety of boaters and people nearby,” the charity said. More details will be released as investigations continue.

In addition, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said search and rescue operations have ended. Teams remain on site to manage the area safely.

Residents have been warned to stay clear while officials stabilise the sinkhole. Experts say such breaches are rare but can happen due to water pressure and ground erosion.

This incident highlights the importance of monitoring canal infrastructure. Authorities said they will review safety measures to prevent future emergencies.

Finally, the community and canal users are urged to follow updates from official channels. Safety remains the top priority until the site is fully secure.
