Commonwealth Nations Offered Space-Based Data Storage

The collaboration was announced on November 6 following discussions at the SMI Business Forum in Antigua and Barbuda. Under the initiative, each Commonwealth country will be offered one terabyte of storage to help protect important digital records.

The partnership will explore how selected government, environmental and institutional information could be preserved in orbit, providing an additional backup option beyond traditional data centres on Earth.

The project is centred on Lonestar’s planned StarVault mission, which is expected to use a low Earth orbit platform for secure data preservation. The initiative also aims to examine how space-based storage could strengthen digital resilience and support environmental monitoring.

The organisations say the proposed system would complement existing data infrastructure rather than replace it. The StarVault archival mission remains in development, with its practical capabilities still to be demonstrated.
