India Extends US$500M Credit Facility to Guyana
India has announced an extension of a US$500 million line of credit for Guyana to help fund projects in roads, healthcare and defence.
The announcement followed a meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda. The two leaders reviewed cooperation between their countries, building on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guyana in 2024.
During the meeting, India and Guyana also signed three agreements. These cover the installation of manufacturing projects for micro and small enterprises, grant support for community-based Quick Impact Projects, and cooperation on digital public infrastructure.
The digital agreement includes plans for a payment system similar to India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which could support electronic transactions in Guyana. The countries also discussed cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, technology and capacity building.
