Cuba Hit by Seventh Major Blackout of 2026
Cuba experienced its seventh major blackout of the year on Friday, according to the country’s energy ministry.
The ministry announced the widespread power outage on X, stating that a total disconnection of the electrical system had occurred. It did not provide a cause for the outage.
The blackout comes as Cuba continues to face fuel shortages and problems with its power infrastructure.
The island, home to more than nine million people, has been struggling to maintain electricity supplies. Fuel shortages have added to the pressure on the country’s energy system.
Power Disruptions Affect Daily Life
Most people in Cuba now have electricity for only a few hours a day at best.
The repeated outages have made daily activities difficult across the island. When the power goes out, essential equipment inside homes also stops working.
Water pumps are affected during outages, disrupting access to water. Ceiling fans also stop operating when electricity is unavailable.
The latest blackout adds to a series of major power disruptions experienced by Cuba this year.
The energy ministry confirmed the latest system-wide outage but did not give further details about how long the disruption would last.
Cuba continues to deal with an energy crisis marked by fuel shortages and an aging power system. The country’s electricity supply remains limited, leaving many residents with only short periods of power each day.
The latest outage is the seventh major blackout recorded in Cuba this year.
