Browne Says Antigua Should Become a Republic
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has openly stated that he wants Antigua and Barbuda to become a republic, meaning King Charles III would no longer serve as the country’s head of state.
Speaking to ITV News during the King’s visit to Antigua and Barbuda, Browne described himself as a republican but acknowledged that the decision ultimately rests with the people. Under the country’s Constitution, replacing the monarch requires approval from two-thirds of voters.
Browne said that until such a decision is made, he will continue to recognise King Charles in his current constitutional role and extend the courtesies associated with the position.
The Prime Minister also addressed Britain’s historical involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, arguing that even if the United Kingdom issues a formal apology, discussions about reparations should continue.
His comments come as King Charles visits the region and prepares to address the legacy of slavery during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
