A new conservation initiative was launched in Antigua and Barbuda during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, with US$202.2 million in initial pledges to support the protection of land and oceans.

The Commonwealth Nature Initiative brings together governments, philanthropic foundations and conservation organisations to help countries meet the global goal of protecting at least 30 per cent of the world’s land and oceans by 2030.

The funding will support the creation and expansion of protected areas, while also strengthening the role and rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in conservation.

The Eastern Caribbean is among the initiative’s initial focus areas, with support expected for the OECS 30×30 Transformation Programme. The initiative also aims to attract an additional US$1 billion in funding by 2030.
