Japan’s Centenarian Population Tops 100,000
Japan has recorded more than 100,000 people aged 100 or older for the first time, setting a new record in a country known for its high life expectancy.
The number of centenarians reached 107,677 in September, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The figure increased by almost 8,000 from the previous year and marks the 56th consecutive annual rise.
Women make up most of the centenarian population. They account for 94,298 people, or about 88% of the total.
Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno welcomed the figures. He said he was pleased that so many people are remaining active and healthy into old age.
Japan consistently ranks among the countries with the longest life expectancy. The World Bank recorded Japan’s average life expectancy at 84 years in 2024. By comparison, the figure for the United States was 79 years.
Scientists have linked Japan’s longevity to factors such as diet and its advanced healthcare system. Some people also follow the philosophy of “ikigai,” which encourages finding value and enjoyment in life.
Aging Population Creates Challenges
Japan is now home to some of the world’s oldest people. According to the ministry, Fuyo Kishimoto, a 114-year-old woman in Kyoto, and Hikaru Kato, a 112-year-old man from Kumamoto, are among them.
However, the growing number of older people also presents challenges for Japan. The aging population is increasing pressure on elderly care services while contributing to a shrinking workforce.
At the same time, Japan’s overall population continues to decline. The country has about 123 million people, while its birth rate has reached a record low.
The population decline has created concerns about the future size of Japan’s workforce and the resources needed to support an aging society.
In recent years, Japan has opened its doors to skilled and other workers to help address labor shortages. However, the government has recently tightened some visa requirements as anti-foreigner sentiment has increased.
The record number of centenarians highlights a major contrast for Japan. While more people are living to 100 and beyond, the country continues to face a declining population and growing pressure from an aging society.
