Guyana Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed says families of the MV Barima victims want the sunken ferry salvaged to recover missing loved ones and find closure.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mohamed said he met with survivors and relatives of those who died in the MV Barima tragedy. He said families told him they want the vessel raised, even if only human remains are recovered.

“The families want the vessel to float. Even if it is only the bones, they want them because it will bring closure,” Mohamed said.

He said he has offered assistance to help recover the MV Barima and believes the operation should begin as soon as possible.

Mohamed also accused the Government of delaying the salvage because it fears what investigators might find. He claimed the MV Barima had mechanical problems, including a faulty anchor, damaged electronic systems and only one working engine. The Government has not responded directly to those claims.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips recently acknowledged that more bodies could still be inside the MV Barima. However, he said the Government will consult victims’ families before making a final decision on salvaging the vessel. He added that officials have received local and international offers to help with the operation.

Phillips also confirmed that the Commission of Inquiry into the MV Barima disaster will proceed whether or not the ferry is recovered.

Mohamed questioned whether the inquiry would be independent. He argued that it may not deliver justice if government officials continue to influence the process.

The MV Barima tragedy has prompted growing calls for accountability. Families continue to demand answers and want the ferry recovered so they can bring their loved ones home.
