PM Gaston Browne ordered that all outstanding back pay be settled without delay. He spoke at a Labour Day rally in Antigua and Barbuda. Moreover, he warned that excuses for delays will no longer be accepted.

The event was hosted by the Antigua Trades and Labour Union and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party. There, Browne addressed workers, union leaders, and public officials. He focused on fairness and accountability.

First, Browne made it clear that all workers must receive what they are owed. He stressed that payments must move forward quickly. In addition, he said the process should not face further delays.

“When we said process the back pay, we expect action,” Browne said. “Every single worker must be paid.”

Furthermore, he directed senior public servants to take responsibility. He urged them to complete the required administrative steps. According to him, the funds are already available.

“Do the research and provide the documents,” he said. “The money is in the treasury.”

However, concerns have grown over slow payments in parts of the public sector. As a result, Browne’s message signaled a firmer stance. He indicated that delays undermine trust in the system.

At the same time, he emphasized respect for workers. He said fair treatment must remain a priority. Therefore, he urged officials to respond to concerns with urgency.

“Treat the workers with respect,” Browne added.

Meanwhile, his remarks formed part of a wider Labour Day message. He highlighted wages, working conditions, and worker protections. In addition, he pointed to the need for continued reform.

The issue of back pay includes workers affected during the COVID-19 period. Many still await payments tied to that time. Consequently, the government now faces pressure to act faster.

Browne also noted that his administration has begun a new term after the recent election. Therefore, he said delivering for workers remains a key goal. He promised that commitments to labour will be honored.

In closing, Browne reinforced his position. He said all outstanding payments must be cleared. Overall, his message was direct. Workers must be paid fully and without further delay.
