Wickham Urges Early Election Call Amid ABLP Momentum
Wickham is urging Prime Minister Gaston Browne to act quickly. He believes the timing favors the government.
According to Peter Wickham, the ruling Antigua Barbuda Labour Party has strong momentum. Therefore, he suggests an early general election.
This advice follows a key by-election result. Recently, Randy Baltimore won the St. Philip North seat. He secured 924 votes in a clear victory.
Meanwhile, Alex Browne of the United Progressive Party gained 406 votes. As a result, the opposition suffered another setback.
Wickham argues that the political climate now favors the government. In fact, he says the opposition remains on the back foot. Therefore, he sees a rare opportunity for the ABLP.
Moreover, he believes chances like this do not come often. As the government eyes a fourth term, timing becomes critical. So, he urges leaders to act while support is high.
At the same time, Wickham addressed opposition leadership issues. He pointed to challenges facing Jamale Pringle.
According to Wickham, repeated losses raise serious concerns. For example, he noted the loss of the St. Peter’s seat. In addition, several candidates have left the party.
Furthermore, some members have voiced doubts about current leadership. Because of this, Wickham suggests a possible resignation. He says this would follow Westminster traditions.
He also recommends a special party conference. There, members could decide the party’s future direction. This, in turn, could restore confidence among supporters.
Meanwhile, Bertrand Joseph shared similar concerns. He described the opposition’s situation as troubling.
He noted weak support on the ground. As a result, mobilization efforts appear limited. This raises doubts about the party’s strength.
Joseph also questioned public confidence. If support is low, voters may hesitate to engage. Therefore, rebuilding trust becomes essential.
In conclusion, Wickham sees a political opening for the government. If opposition struggles continue, the advantage may grow. Consequently, an early election could secure ABLP’s position.
