Guyana is increasing farm production as it works to strengthen food security across the Caribbean.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the sector has changed greatly since 2020. He pointed to higher production, more processing, and greater use of technology.

According to Guyana’s Department of Public Information, the agriculture budget has also grown. It rose from GYD$18.4 billion in 2020 to GYD$113.2 billion in 2026.

Meanwhile, rice production increased from about 500,000 tonnes in 2020 to 825,000 tonnes in 2025.

Production of 15 priority crops also rose during that period. It increased from 1.41 million tonnes to 1.81 million tonnes.

Corn production grew by more than 330 per cent. Coconut production also increased by 235 per cent.

In addition, Guyana has started expanding soybean production. The goal is to produce more local protein for the animal feed industry.

The livestock sector also recorded growth. It increased by 12.5 per cent between 2020 and 2025.

Poultry production more than doubled during that period. It rose from 43,736 tonnes to 91,382 tonnes. Beef, pork, and egg production also increased.

Guyana has also invested in agro-processing. Thirteen facilities now operate across the country, including in hinterland communities.

These facilities allow farmers to keep products for longer. They can also help farmers reach new markets and earn more from their goods.

Furthermore, the government is encouraging more young people to enter agriculture. About 1,200 shade houses have been built through government programmes over the past five years.

Hydroponic facilities in Regions Two, Five, and Ten are also creating opportunities for young farmers. These facilities support the production and sale of high-value crops.

Hinterland farming is growing as well. About 300 acres of onions are expected to be planted in Region Nine this year.

The government is also supporting crops such as dragon fruit, watermelon, and cassava. At the same time, it is investing in storage and processing.

Food security remains the ministry’s main priority for the next four years.

Guyana is also supporting CARICOM efforts to reduce the region’s food import bill. The country is working toward a 25 per cent reduction by 2030.

As a result, Guyana has taken a leading role in regional agriculture and food security efforts.

Mustapha said CARICOM countries are increasingly seeking Guyana’s technical support. He added that the country wants to build a stronger food system for both local and regional markets.
