The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture (DoA) has confirmed an outbreak of infectious coryza in several chicken flocks across the territory. Officials did not say how many flocks are affected. However, they stressed that the disease does not pose a risk to people. They also said poultry meat and eggs remain safe to eat.

Infectious coryza is a bacterial disease that affects only birds. It attacks the respiratory system and spreads quickly between chickens. Birds can catch it through direct contact with infected flocks. The bacteria can also spread through contaminated feed, water, equipment, clothing, footwear, and transport vehicles. Poor ventilation in poultry houses can also help the disease spread.

The disease causes swelling around the face and wattles. Infected birds may also develop discharge from the nose and eyes, sneeze frequently, and become weak or tired. Although most adult birds survive, the illness can reduce egg production by 10 to 40 percent. This can affect poultry farmers and local food production.

Director of Agriculture Wilbur Welcome said the department is working closely with farmers to manage the outbreak. Teams are carrying out surveillance, providing access to treatment, and preparing a vaccination programme. He said protecting local food production remains a top priority while helping farmers control the disease.

Officials are urging poultry farmers to improve biosecurity on their farms. They recommend disinfecting footwear and equipment before entering poultry areas. Farmers should also isolate new birds for at least 30 days, separate sick birds from healthy ones, and limit visitors to poultry facilities.

Veterinarians say broad-spectrum antibiotics can help treat infected birds and reduce symptoms. However, treatment does not remove the bacteria completely. Recovered birds can continue carrying the disease and infect other flocks. Farmers are also encouraged to provide vitamins, electrolytes, and clean, dry housing to help birds recover.

The government has started the process of importing infectious coryza vaccines. Once they arrive, the Department’s Veterinary Services team will distribute them and provide guidance on how to use them correctly.

The Department of Agriculture is asking poultry producers to watch their flocks closely for signs of illness. Farmers should report suspected cases immediately so veterinary teams can test birds quickly and begin treatment where needed.
