Parliament Street leads the first phase of a housing redevelopment plan in Grace Farm. Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the plan as part of urban renewal efforts.

First, the government targets aging and low-income homes. These homes sit in poor condition. In addition, officials want to improve living standards.

Moreover, Browne said the plan will deliver modern housing units. He described them as climate-resilient homes. These units will follow a condominium-style design.

He also confirmed Parliament Street as the starting point. “I’ll be doing a tour,” he said. He added that work begins there first.

Therefore, construction could start soon after the general election. The government expects quick movement once the programme launches.

In addition, the plan removes old and unsafe structures. Officials will tear down dilapidated homes. Then, they will build new housing units in their place.

Furthermore, Browne said the goal focuses on vulnerable residents. He wants better housing for those in need. As a result, the plan aims to raise quality of life.

“We’re going to rip out all of those low-income homes,” he said. He also said the new homes will meet climate standards.

Meanwhile, the project builds on earlier housing work. The Booby Alley project already set a similar example. That effort helped guide current plans.

Consequently, the government expands its urban renewal strategy. It plans to apply the model in other communities. These areas also face poor housing conditions.

In addition, Browne stressed fairness in housing policy. He said society must care for its most vulnerable people. Therefore, housing reform remains a key priority.

“A society is known by the way it treats its most vulnerable,” he said.

Moreover, the plan links to wider national housing goals. The government wants modern homes across Antigua and Barbuda. It also wants safer and stronger housing structures.

Finally, Browne said more communities will join the programme later. The plan will extend beyond Grace Farm. As a result, urban renewal will continue across the country.
