Store clerk ordered to repay $6K in debit card fraud case
Store clerk Jamila Edwards has been ordered to pay $6,000 compensation after a debit card fraud case. The High Court delivered the ruling yesterday.
First, the court reviewed offences that took place in 2023. Edwards was 27 years old at the time. She worked as a clerk at Super Power.
In addition, the case involved unauthorised online shopping. She used her employer’s debit card on the Shein platform. As a result, thousands of dollars were spent without permission.
Moreover, the court outlined how the incident began. The employer asked her to complete an ECAB debit card application on his behalf. She carried out that request.
Afterward, he collected the card. He later returned to the store. Then he asked her to set up online banking access. She completed that task.
However, the fraud remained hidden for some time. The problem surfaced when the employer tried to use the card in Miami. The card was declined multiple times.
Consequently, he returned to Antigua and checked the account. He then discovered several unauthorised purchases. These transactions were made without his consent.
Furthermore, the bank provided details of the spending. Between September 12 and October 20, 2023, the card was used repeatedly. The total amounted to $5,797.53.
In addition, the goods were purchased from Shein in China. Therefore, the spending was clearly identified as online retail activity.
The matter was then reported to police. After that, officers arrested Edwards. She was charged and brought before the High Court.
At sentencing, the court ordered compensation. Edwards must pay $6,000 in total. She must pay $3,000 immediately.
In addition, she must pay the remaining $3,000 in instalments. The court set monthly payments of $500 until the balance is cleared.
As a result, the case concluded with a structured repayment order. The court closed the matter after issuing the financial penalty.
