Housing plan linked to election promise

Maria Browne says a re-elected government will expand rent-to-own housing. She made the statement during a “Know Your Candidate” interview. Moreover, she tied the plan to wider housing reform.

She said many residents cannot access bank mortgages. However, many can still afford monthly payments. Therefore, the government wants to bridge that gap.

Renaissance Park as flagship project

Browne highlighted Renaissance Park in St. John’s Rural East. She described it as a flagship housing project. In addition, she said it responds to strong demand for housing access.

The project will include townhouses and single-family homes. It will offer rent-to-own arrangements. As a result, residents can work toward ownership over time.

Site and construction details

The development will sit on lands now used by the Clarevue facility. That facility will relocate first. After that, construction will begin.

Browne said construction will take about two to two-and-a-half years. The timeline starts once site clearance finishes. Therefore, progress depends on relocation and preparation work.

Expanding access across communities

Browne said the rent-to-own model will expand beyond one site. She confirmed plans for multiple communities. Moreover, she said the goal is wider access to ownership.

She said, “We’re going to have rent-to-own opportunities in various communities.” In addition, she stressed the program will not stay limited to Renaissance Park.

Focus on affordability and inclusion

Browne said the plan targets people who can pay rent but not mortgages. This includes single parents and working families. However, they often fail bank requirements.

Therefore, the model aims to create a path to ownership. She linked housing access to long-term financial stability. As a result, she described it as economic empowerment.

The rent-to-own plan forms part of a larger housing strategy. The government aims to increase ownership opportunities nationwide. Moreover, housing remains a key policy focus.
