Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers is advising business owners to protect their lives during armed robberies. He said people should hand over money if criminals threaten them and avoid actions that could put them in danger.

Jeffers gave the warning after the fatal shooting of Eleazer “Fresshy” Francis, a 60-year-old Freeman’s Village businessman. Francis operated a supermarket along Freeman’s Village Main Road. Police said two men arrived in a silver vehicle and entered the business shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Investigators said a confrontation happened inside the supermarket. Francis suffered gunshot injuries during the incident and later died. Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify the persons responsible.

Speaking with reporters, Jeffers said business owners should not risk their lives over cash or property. He encouraged them to cooperate with armed criminals when police officers are not nearby.

“No amount of money costs your life,” Jeffers said. “If you find yourself in a situation like this and there’s no police around, just turn over the money. Your life is more valuable.”

The commissioner said police would rather respond to a robbery than investigate a murder. He also urged merchants to reduce the amount of cash they keep at their businesses.

Jeffers recommended that business operators clear their cash registers often and avoid allowing large amounts of money to remain on the premises. He said these steps could help reduce risks during robbery attempts.

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda is also increasing security measures ahead of Carnival. Jeffers said officers will carry out more patrols and provide additional support across the island during the busy season.

The police chief said the increased presence aims to improve public safety and help officers respond faster to criminal activity. Authorities continue to investigate Francis’ death and are asking anyone with information to contact the police.

The killing has raised renewed concerns about safety for business owners and workers. Police continue to remind the public that cooperation during dangerous situations can help prevent further loss of life.
