Cabinet Highlights Youth Sports, Jobs and CHOGM Preparations

Cabinet

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda discussed several major national initiatives during its meeting on June 10, including youth sports development, employment opportunities, preparations for CHOGM 2026, and international partnerships.

Cabinet welcomed representatives from the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association following the national Under-20 Men’s Football Team’s qualification for the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship in Mexico. Antigua and Barbuda is the only OECS country to qualify for the tournament. The Cabinet also agreed to allow Premier League football to return to the Antigua Recreation Ground on a pilot basis for the upcoming season.

The Government also received an update on efforts to make Spanish the country’s second language. Discussions with Spain could lead to teacher training, educational resources, scholarships, student exchanges, and the possible establishment of a Spanish language and cultural institute in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Cabinet reviewed employment and work permit procedures and agreed that employers must provide stronger evidence that jobs have been advertised locally before work permits are approved. Officials also plan to expand outreach through digital platforms to connect more citizens with available jobs.

Updates were provided on preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Officials reported strong international interest, growing volunteer participation, and continued progress in security, transportation, accommodation, and infrastructure planning.

The Cabinet also received reports on agricultural cooperation with Japan, including discussions on fisheries development, food security, marine conservation, and educational exchanges.

In addition, the Cabinet reviewed progress toward establishing the Barbuda Land Registry and advanced a legislative agenda that includes measures related to public safety, workplace protections, healthcare, immigration, and justice reform.

Cabinet said the initiatives support economic growth, youth development, international cooperation, and national progress.
