U.S. Cracks Down on Birth Tourism Networks

The U.S. State Department says it is increasing efforts to combat birth tourism schemes around the world. Officials have revoked visas and launched investigations into networks accused of helping foreign nationals travel to the United States, mainly to secure U.S. citizenship for their children.

According to the department, consular officers and law enforcement agencies have uncovered several organized operations that allegedly used fraudulent documents, visa consultants, and coaching services to help applicants obtain U.S. visitor visas under pretenses.

In one recent case, a U.S. embassy in West Africa identified what officials described as a sophisticated birth tourism network involving more than 100 foreign nationals. Investigators said applicants allegedly relied on fraudulent paperwork and visa “fixers” to gain entry into the United States.

As a result, the visas of those involved were revoked. U.S. authorities are also working with local law enforcement partners to identify and dismantle similar operations in the region.

The State Department reported additional enforcement efforts in Europe. Officials said a U.S. embassy has identified more than 400 suspected birth tourism cases since 2024.

Investigators linked those cases to at least six companies that allegedly coached visa applicants on how to respond during interviews. The companies were also accused of arranging accommodations in the United States and coordinating plans related to childbirth.

The State Department said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the U.S. visa system. Officials warned that individuals who provide false information during the visa process may face visa revocations and other penalties.

Authorities say investigations into suspected birth tourism networks are continuing in several regions as efforts expand to prevent visa fraud and disrupt organized schemes.
