Rastafarian Community Protests Drug Arrests

Members of Antigua and Barbuda’s Rastafarian community staged a protest outside the St John’s Police Station, voicing concerns over the incarceration of individuals facing marijuana-related charges.

The demonstration followed the recent arrest and charging of four men in connection with a large cannabis cultivation operation near Pares. Protesters argued that the treatment of cannabis-related offences remains a matter of concern, particularly for members of the Rastafarian community who regard marijuana as part of their religious and cultural practices.

Participants gathered peacefully outside the police station, calling for greater consideration of religious rights and a review of how cannabis-related cases are handled. Placards and public statements highlighted concerns about the continued criminalization of marijuana offences.

The protest comes amid ongoing national discussions surrounding cannabis laws, religious freedoms, and law enforcement policies. Authorities have not indicated any changes to the legal proceedings involving the accused individuals.
