ABLP Welcomes UWI Five Islands Law Degree Launch
ABLP has welcomed the launch of a new law degree at UWI Five Islands Campus. The party called it a major step for education. Moreover, it said the move will expand local opportunities.
The new Bachelor of Laws programme will begin in August 2026. Already, the first group has attracted regional students. Therefore, interest in the programme is growing.
Students can now study law at home in Antigua and Barbuda. As a result, many may no longer need to go abroad. This could help reduce the loss of skilled people.
The programme will receive support from the UWI Mona Campus. In addition, its Faculty of Law will guide academic standards. This ensures quality teaching and strong oversight.
Minister of Education Daryll Matthew praised the development. He said it will strengthen national capacity. Furthermore, it will support growth in law and public service.
“Antiguans and Barbudans can now pursue degrees at home,” he said. Consequently, the country can build more local talent. This also supports long-term national development.
Matthew also pointed to a planned campus expansion. The project is valued at US $80 million. He said funding has already been secured.
Because of this, Antigua and Barbuda aims to become a leading education hub. The government believes the new programme supports that goal. In turn, it could boost regional interest.
Meanwhile, Michael Joseph shared his views on the impact. He is an ABLP aspirant for St. John’s Rural West. Notably, the campus sits in that constituency.
Joseph said the expansion will drive economic activity. For example, demand for housing is expected to rise. In addition, businesses like food spots and shops may grow.
He also predicted growth in delivery services. Therefore, nearby communities could benefit. Grays-Green and Five Islands may see new opportunities.
Over time, the area could become a university town economy. This would bring steady business and development. As a result, more jobs could follow.
Joseph stressed that the benefits go beyond one area. He said the project is a win for the entire country. Ultimately, the law programme marks a new chapter in education.
Interested students must apply online before June 30, 2026.
