St Kitts and Nevis PM Receives Care Overseas

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has travelled overseas for scheduled medical tests and specialist assessments.

Drew arrived at an undisclosed medical facility without incident, according to the Cabinet Secretariat. He is now settled at the facility and remains in stable condition.

The government has not revealed the name of the medical facility. Officials have also not said which country Drew travelled to for treatment. His family accompanied him during the trip.

Specialists caring for Drew have spoken with doctors at Joseph N France General Hospital in Basseterre. The medical teams reviewed his records and discussed his care plan.

The Cabinet said Drew remains fully alert and in good spirits. The evaluations will continue under the care of the medical specialists.

The government first confirmed Drew’s illness on Monday. Officials said the 49-year-old prime minister became ill and entered Joseph N France General Hospital on Sunday evening, August 30.

Drew later left the federation to continue his medical care overseas.

Acting Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley addressed the nation on Monday night. Hanley said he spoke with Drew before the prime minister departed.

He also assured the public that the government remains focused on its responsibilities. Hanley said the leadership team remains united and that government business continues without interruption.

The Cabinet has also thanked citizens and residents for their support and prayers. Officials expressed appreciation to regional and international partners who have shown concern for the prime minister.

Government operations continue under Hanley and the Federal Cabinet of Ministers. Social and economic activities across the federation are also continuing as normal.

The Cabinet Secretariat said it will provide further information when necessary.

Drew has also received messages of support from several Caribbean leaders.

Caricom Chairman and St Lucia Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre said he learned about Drew’s illness on Monday. Pierre described Drew as both a colleague and friend. He wished him a speedy recovery.

Pierre also spoke about the demands placed on prime ministers. He said Drew’s situation should remind leaders to recognise the stress that comes with their responsibilities.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley also expressed her support. She described Drew as a valued colleague, friend and Caribbean brother.

Mottley said she continues to keep Drew and his family in her prayers. She also wished him renewed strength, healing and a full recovery.

Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchel said his government was saddened by Drew’s hospitalisation. He offered his government’s thoughts and prayers to Drew and his family.

Mitchel also expressed support for the government and people of the federation. He wished the prime minister renewed strength, good health and a speedy return to his official duties.

Officials have not released further details about Drew’s medical condition. The Cabinet Secretariat said it will issue additional updates as needed.
