Two people have died and 14 others remain missing or unaccounted for following flash flooding in a remote section of Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona.

The flooding began Saturday in Bright Angel Canyon and around Phantom Ranch, deep within the canyon. The National Park Service said search and recovery efforts are continuing, although weather conditions could affect the timing and pace of operations.

Officials initially said they were trying to account for more than 20 people. Two bodies have since been recovered, including that of a 46-year-old man found near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. Fourteen people are still being sought.

The flooding also caused extensive damage to infrastructure in the inner canyon, including trails, bridges and utilities. Preliminary assessments indicate that about 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline, which supplies water for use in the park, was damaged or destroyed.

The waterline remains out of operation, leaving the park with limited water reserves and forcing significant conservation measures.

Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins, as well as the entire North Kaibab Trail, remain closed until further notice. Visitors have been urged to stay out of the affected area while search operations continue.
