US Humanitarian Worker Tests Positive for Ebola

US

A US citizen working for a humanitarian organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC said it is working with the individual’s employer, federal agencies and health partners in the DRC to identify close contacts and help prevent further transmission. Officials stressed that no Ebola cases have been confirmed in the United States and that the risk to the American public remains very low.

The latest case comes as the DRC continues to battle a major Ebola outbreak, with more than 1,800 confirmed infections and over 600 deaths. The outbreak remains largely confined to remote areas of the DRC and neighbouring Uganda.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as international efforts focus on containing the outbreak and preventing further spread.
