Prosecution nears end in Nigel Christian murder trial
Prosecution nears the end of its case in the Nigel Christian murder trial. The final witness is expected to finish testimony on Thursday.
Moreover, the trial continues before Justice Rajiv Persaud. The case stems from a 2020 killing.
Three men face charges in the matter. They are Saleim Harrigan, Wayne Thomas, and Lasean Bully. Prosecutors say they abducted Nigel Christian from his McKinnons home.
In addition, the Crown alleges they later shot him in Thibou’s. The court continues to hear detailed evidence.
On Wednesday, the lead investigator from the Serious Crimes Unit gave testimony. She described key steps in the police investigation. She also explained how officers built the case.
Furthermore, an Assistant Superintendent of Police finished cross-examination earlier. Defence lawyers questioned a key witness.
That witness said he drove the accused. He also said he saw the abduction. In addition, he claimed he later found the body.
However, the court heard major gaps in technical evidence. Officers recovered a damaged DVR from the victim’s vehicle.
Moreover, the device failed during analysis. Even FBI assistance could not recover data. Therefore, the court received no video footage.
The officer said investigators relied heavily on the driver’s statement. No video supported his account.
In addition, jurors heard conflicting reports about suspects. Christian’s mother first said four men were involved. Later, she testified she saw three.
The lead investigator also described her role in the case. She processed the crime scene in Thibou’s. She also collected items from the victim’s vehicle in Cassada Gardens.
Furthermore, she confirmed that police interviewed the accused separately. Officers charged them in April 2021.
She also disclosed another detail in court. Investigators never forensically tested a laptop found in the vehicle. This raised questions about the handling of evidence.
Meanwhile, a witness reported seeing a white RAV4 speeding through Royal Gardens. This sighting occurred on the day of the killing.
Finally, the Crown plans to close its case soon. After that, the defence will begin its arguments.
